Jas Ammitzboell has always worked between contrasts. Now splitting her time between Sydney and New York, the Australian–Danish designer of Asta Resort draws inspiration from both — the pace, the people, the everyday moments in between. We met Jas in Paddington to talk about missing the beach, navigating the realities of running a young independent label, and what a perfect Sunday in New York really looks like.

Having recently moved to NYC, what do you miss most about your home in Sydney?

The beach!

How does living between 2 cities shape your creative vision?

I feel like I get to see different sides of the industry and draw inspiration from both Sydney’s relaxed lifestyle and New York’s character.

What are some challenges being a part of a young, independent brand?

It never stops, but every day is different and I wouldn’t wanna be anywhere else.

And when you’re back in Sydney, what’s your go-to coffee spot, how does the vibe compare?

I like Effie’s in Balgowlah or Noon in Manly where I can talk to friends for hours. I think the difference would be that New York has more of a cozy charm and Sydney feels very laid back, especially being so close to the beach.

If we were spending a Sunday in New York with you, what would the day look like?

I’d have breakfast at Buvette and then go to Chelsea flea market to pick up some (unnecessary) Knick knacks. Then I’d get a wine somewhere I haven’t tried before.
